DNV and MIRDC Join Hands to Promote Renewable Energy in Taiwan

DNV, a global expert in energy systems, has signed an important agreement with the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) to promote renewable energy technology in Taiwan. MIRDC, a non-profit group focused on improving Taiwan’s metal industries, will work closely with DNV under this three-year partnership. The signing event took place on October 18, 2024, at the DNV Technology Centre in Singapore, with key representatives—Yung-Hsiang Lai, CEO of MIRDC, and Dr. Matthew Rowe, Director of Power Grids, APAC at DNV—leading the ceremony.

Focus Areas of the Partnership

The partnership between DNV and MIRDC will explore several key technologies, including floating solar and wind energy systems, energy storage, and hydrogen solutions. Taiwan is committed to reducing carbon emissions and aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050. This collaboration will help Taiwan achieve its climate goals by focusing on new technologies to stabilize energy supply and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Taiwan’s Push for Clean Energy

Taiwan is already making big efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Its 2050 net-zero plan includes increasing the use of low-carbon energy sources like hydrogen and ammonia. As renewable energy expands, Taiwan will need better energy storage systems to ensure reliable electricity. Using renewable hydrogen can help Taiwan integrate renewable sources like solar and wind into the grid, preventing power outages when the weather changes. Hydrogen can also support industries and improve transportation by replacing fossil fuels, which will help the country build a green economy.

How DNV Supports Taiwan’s Energy Transition

DNV has already worked with several companies in Taiwan, helping them design and implement carbon reduction strategies. They provide guidance on using hydrogen, ammonia, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies to cut emissions. Through this new partnership with MIRDC, DNV will strengthen these efforts and help Taiwan achieve its renewable energy targets.

Voices from the Leadership

Ren-Yi Lin, Chairman of MIRDC, expressed excitement about the partnership:
“We are happy to work with DNV, a partner committed to helping industries transition to cleaner energy. At MIRDC, we focus on developing sustainable and innovative energy solutions. By combining our skills with DNV’s expertise, we can promote the growth of renewable energy technology in Taiwan and align with global energy goals.”

Brice Le Gallo, Vice President and Regional Director APAC at DNV, also highlighted the importance of the collaboration:
“This agreement with MIRDC is an important step toward advancing renewable energy in Taiwan. DNV is proud to offer our technical knowledge and advisory services to help Taiwan transition to a low-carbon future. Together, we will play a key role in supporting Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero ambitions.”

Looking Toward a Green Future

This partnership between DNV and MIRDC marks a significant step in Taiwan’s journey toward becoming a cleaner and more sustainable nation. By focusing on new technologies such as hydrogen energy, floating solar, and better storage systems, Taiwan can secure a reliable energy supply while reducing its carbon footprint. With the combined efforts of DNV and MIRDC, Taiwan is well on its way to building a green economy and meeting its climate goals for a healthier future.
