DNV awards Norsepower Rotor Sails™ unique certification
Norsepower Secures DNV Certification for Explosion-Proof Rotor Sail, Pioneering Safety in Wind-Assisted Propulsion
Norsepower has reached an important milestone by obtaining the Type Approval Design Certificate (TADC) from DNV for the explosion-proof (EX) version of its Rotor Sail™ technology. This marks the first approval for a Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) to be used in hazardous zones on vessels carrying explosive liquids and gases. The certification is a key development in making wind-assisted propulsion technology safer and more accessible for vessels operating in high-risk environments.
This DNV certification confirms that Norsepower’s EX version of the Rotor Sail™ meets the strict safety standards required for hazardous areas. It streamlines the installation process for shipbuilders, reducing the need for extensive documentation and simplifying the class approval process for vessels equipped with the sails. The certification underscores Norsepower’s focus on enhancing safety within the maritime industry.
BHP Collaborates with Norsepower to Reduce GHG Emissions in Maritime Transport
Norsepower’s innovative design includes a pressurized air system that prevents the accumulation of flammable gases in critical components like the power unit and electrical cabinets. This advancement offers a higher level of safety compared to previous models and ensures compliance with strict industry regulations. It also demonstrates Norsepower’s commitment to advancing both safety and sustainability in the maritime sector.
By receiving this certification, Norsepower strengthens its leadership in wind-assisted propulsion and expands the potential for a broader range of vessels to adopt its Rotor Sail™ technology. This will contribute to improved energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global efforts to decarbonize maritime transportation.
