Dole speeds up proposed shipbuilding center in Zambales
The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) in the Philippines is expediting the establishment of a shipbuilding training center in Zambales following a recent collaboration with Korean executives. This move aims to enhance the skills of Filipino workers in the shipbuilding industry to bolster the country’s maritime capabilities.
The partnership, forged with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) and Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI), signals a significant step towards strengthening the workforce in the maritime sector. The proposed Official Development Assistance (ODA) project, discussed during a meeting with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), underscores the urgency of equipping the local workforce with the necessary skills and expertise.

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino emphasized the importance of this initiative in light of the upcoming ASEAN summit in November. He assured that Dole and Tesda are committed to expediting the implementation of the project to support the growth of the Philippine shipbuilding industry. Tolentino highlighted the positive impact this partnership would have on the local maritime sector, emphasizing the need for timely action to meet industry demands.
Hyundai’s Role in Reviving Shipbuilding Industry
The inauguration of Hyundai’s shipyard in Subic, Zambales, last year marked a pivotal moment in the revival of the country’s shipbuilding industry. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his commitment to revitalizing the sector, with Hyundai playing a crucial role as one of the major tenants at the Agila Subic shipyard. The 310-hectare maritime and industrial complex is poised to become a hub for maritime activities, contributing to the growth of the local economy and job creation.
As the shipbuilding training center takes shape in Zambales, the collaboration between Dole, Tesda, and Korean partners is set to pave the way for a more skilled and competitive maritime workforce in the Philippines.
