Dong Fang Offshore orders third CSOV from Vard

Dong Fang Offshore Expands Fleet with New CSOV Order

Taiwanese company Dong Fang Offshore (DFO) has placed an order for an additional commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) from Vard, a Norwegian shipbuilder under Fincantieri. This latest vessel will be a sister ship to two CSOVs contracted in May 2024 and follows a recent order for a subsea construction vessel. The new CSOV is designed to support sustainable wind farm operations, emphasizing low-emission technologies.

Innovative Design for Sustainable Operations

The new CSOV is based on the Vard 4 39 design, a collaborative effort between Dong Fang and Vard, specifically tailored for the commissioning and installation phases of wind farm projects. This vessel incorporates a fully electric equipment package, which includes a battery system, crane, and a walk-to-work gangway. Vard has highlighted that the design is not only efficient but also prepared for future fuel options, aligning with the industry’s shift towards low-emission operations.

Construction of the vessel will take place at Vard Vung Tau, with plans for outfitting, commissioning, and delivery set for the first quarter of 2028. Upon completion, the CSOV will enter into a minimum 15-year service contract with an undisclosed customer in Taiwan, marking a significant step in Dong Fang’s commitment to enhancing its fleet for renewable energy projects.

This order reflects the growing demand for specialized vessels in the renewable energy sector, particularly as countries ramp up efforts to transition to sustainable energy sources. Dong Fang’s strategic investments in advanced vessel technology underscore its role in supporting the wind energy industry in Taiwan and beyond.
