DryDel Shipping Expands Fleet with New Capesize Orders

Greek shipping company DryDel Shipping is significantly enhancing its fleet by securing contracts for two additional capesize bulk carriers from Japan’s Namura Shipbuilding. This latest move brings the total number of capesize vessels in DryDel’s orderbook to four, all currently under construction. The company aims to strengthen its position in the larger tonnage segment, reflecting a strategic shift in its operations.

Strategic Growth and Commitment to Efficiency

DryDel’s recent agreements include two 182,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) capesize bulk carriers, with the latest contract finalized this year. This follows a previous order placed in July 2025, marking a significant expansion of the company’s capabilities in the bulk shipping market. The delivery of these new vessels is scheduled for 2029, aligning with DryDel’s long-term growth strategy.

All four capesize vessels will be equipped with advanced scrubbers and Tier III, EEDI Phase 3-compliant engines. This focus on fuel efficiency and reduced emissions underscores DryDel’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. Chief Executive Costas Dellaportas emphasized that these orders are part of a broader vision for the company, stating, “With this addition, 11 dry bulk vessels are currently under construction, all featuring ultra-efficient engines and high performance.”

DryDel Shipping’s entry into the capesize segment is a strategic decision aimed at capitalizing on the growing demand for larger bulk carriers. The company has a longstanding relationship with Japanese shipyards, having previously ordered four handysize bulk carriers from Namura. Since 2019, DryDel has invested over $800 million in 25 newbuilding projects at leading Japanese shipyards, demonstrating its commitment to expanding its fleet and supporting the shipbuilding industry in Japan.
