Dual-fuel Methanol Carrier Kohzan Maru VII Delivered –

MOL Launches First Methanol Dual-Fuel Carrier

On May 30, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) celebrated the delivery of the Kohzan Maru VII, a groundbreaking methanol dual-fuel carrier, from HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea. This new vessel is set to serve Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC) under a long-term charter agreement. The Kohzan Maru VII marks a significant milestone as the first methanol dual-fuel ocean-going vessel chartered by a Japanese company, further advancing the use of sustainable maritime fuels.

A Historic Delivery and Naming Ceremony

Prior to its official delivery, the Kohzan Maru VII was named in a ceremony held on May 23 at HD Hyundai Mipo. During the event, MGC Chairman Masashi Fujii performed the christening, celebrating a vessel that continues a legacy dating back to 1983 when MOL and MGC introduced Japan’s inaugural methanol dedicated carrier, the Kohzan Maru. This new vessel is designed not only to transport methanol but also to utilize it as a marine fuel, emphasizing MOL and MGC’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The Kohzan Maru VII is poised to enhance the transportation of environmentally friendly methanol derived from renewable sources. The partnership between MOL and MGC is focused on leading the maritime industry’s transition toward carbon neutrality. Both companies aim to set new standards in sustainable shipping, reinforcing their positions as pioneers in this evolving sector.

Commitment to Sustainability and Future Goals

MOL is actively pursuing its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” which aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To achieve this ambitious goal, MOL is increasing its fleet of clean alternative fuel vessels, targeting 90 LNG and methanol-fueled ships by 2030. The company currently operates one of the world’s largest fleets of methanol dedicated vessels, totaling 19, and has ordered eight methanol dual-fuel vessels since introducing the world’s first in 2016.

The specifications of the Kohzan Maru VII include a deadweight tonnage of 47,960 tons and a Hyundai-MAN B&W engine designed for efficient performance. As MOL continues to expand its methanol dual-fuel fleet, it is committed to leveraging its extensive expertise in the maritime sector. This strategic move not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also positions MOL as a leader in the maritime transition towards a greener future.
