Search Underway for Missing Indian Cadet Ea Jersey – Cargo Ship
The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in India, has launched a coordinated search and rescue operation for Sarthak Mohapatra, an Indian seafarer who went missing from the vessel ‘EA Jersey’. The ship, currently traveling from Tema, Ghana, to Singapore, reported Mohapatra missing on February 3, 2026. He was last seen on board in the early hours of that day.
In response to this incident, the DGS has reached out to several organizations, including the Flag State Administration of Singapore and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mauritius (MRCC Mauritius). They are working closely with the vessel’s Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Club and relevant Indian authorities to ensure an efficient search and rescue effort. SAR operations are being conducted by MRCC Mauritius with the help of two to three nearby vessels.
The family of Sarthak Mohapatra has been informed about the situation. The DGS is continuously reviewing the case through its crisis management framework and is committed to closely monitor all developments. Furthermore, the DGS has initiated a fact-finding investigation by the appropriate authorities. They are also ensuring that all necessary legal and contractual obligations are met, including welfare assistance for the crew member’s family in line with international conventions and agreements.
The Government of Odisha has escalated the matter after receiving an urgent appeal from Mohapatra’s family. They have formally requested expedited action in the search efforts. In response, the DGS has intensified coordination with all relevant stakeholders to support the ongoing operation. The Recruitment and Placement Service Licensee has been instructed to provide maximum assistance to the family during this difficult time.
