Eastern Pacific back for more ammonia carriers at Jiangnan

Eastern Pacific Shipping Expands Ammonia Fleet

In a strategic move to bolster its ammonia carrier capabilities, Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), led by Idan Ofer, has placed an order for two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) at Jiangnan Shipyard in China. The Singapore-based company signed the contract for two 90,000 cubic meter vessels, with an expected delivery in the first half of 2028. This marks Jiangnan’s inaugural shipbuilding contract for 2026, although the financial details remain undisclosed.

Innovative Design for Enhanced Efficiency

The new VLACs will be built using a neo-panamax design, which adheres to the size restrictions of the original Panama Canal locks. Jiangnan Shipyard has emphasized that the design will feature a low-resistance hull, complete with optimized bow and stern lines and refined waterline distribution. These enhancements aim to improve fuel efficiency while maximizing cargo capacity. Notably, the vessels will be equipped with LPG dual-fuel propulsion systems, which are projected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 20% and sulfur oxide emissions by nearly 99% compared to traditional fuel systems.

This latest order strengthens the ongoing partnership between EPS and Jiangnan. In 2023, EPS had already contracted six 93,000 cubic meter VLACs, valued at around $100 million each. Following that, in 2024, the company ordered six ultra-large ethane carriers with a capacity of 150,000 cubic meters. Jiangnan has also recently secured additional VLAC orders, including two units from domestic owner Tianjin Southwest Maritime, further solidifying its position in the market.
