Eastern Shipbuilding Starts Building Next-Generation Tugs for Saltchuk Marine

Eastern Shipbuilding Begins Work on New High-Tech Tugs

Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) has started building the first of four advanced escort tugs for Saltchuk Marine. The work began at ESG’s Allanton Facility in Panama City, Florida, with the cutting of steel, marking a big step forward in the partnership between the two companies. This contract, signed in July 2024, is part of Saltchuk Marine’s plan to modernize its fleet and improve operations along the U.S. West Coast.

Features of the New Tugs

The tugs, designed by Robert Allan Ltd., will be 84 feet long and meet tough environmental rules set by the EPA Tier 4 and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). These standards aim to reduce harmful emissions, showing a strong focus on protecting the environment.

Each tug will feature powerful Caterpillar engines and Schottel RudderPropellers for excellent performance and easy maneuvering. They’ll reach a top speed of 12 knots and have a bollard pull of 95 short tons, making them perfect for assisting larger ships at busy ports.

The tugs will also accommodate up to eight crew members, ensuring safe and smooth operations. With their cutting-edge design and environmental features, these tugs promise to set a new standard in the marine industry.

By adopting innovative designs, Saltchuk Marine is not just improving its fleet but also helping the maritime sector move toward a more sustainable future. These tugs are scheduled to be delivered by 2026 and are expected to play a key role in supporting operations at West Coast ports.

Eastern Shipbuilding’s Strong Track Record

Eastern Shipbuilding Group is a leader in building high-quality tugs, with a history of delivering 35 ship assist tugs over the past 20 years. The company operates three shipyards along the Florida Gulf Coast, giving it the capacity to handle large projects like this one.

These new tugs are part of a broader trend of modernizing maritime operations while reducing environmental impacts. The collaboration between Eastern Shipbuilding and Saltchuk Marine reflects a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.
