Eby pledges new B.C. shipyard, permanent manufacturing fund

At the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade leaders’ forum, David Eby, BC NDP leader, unveiled significant commitments aimed at bolstering B.C.’s shipbuilding, manufacturing, and food production sectors amidst uncertain times. The initiatives include the establishment of permanent funding for the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund and collaboration with the federal government to construct Canada’s inaugural major shipyard in a generation, situated in British Columbia.

Building on Progress and Economic Growth

Eby emphasized the critical need to capitalize on the positive momentum witnessed in both the country and the province. He highlighted the surge in private sector investments, the expanding exports to non-U.S. markets, and the region’s leadership in wage rates within Canada. Eby stressed the importance of sustaining this growth trajectory by avoiding setbacks that could impede progress, jeopardize essential infrastructure projects, and weaken the public services vital for talent attraction.

The BC NDP’s accomplishments, including securing the largest private-sector investment in Canada’s history through LNG Canada’s expansion project, were underscored by Eby. With 41 major projects currently in development across B.C., representing an estimated $130 billion in investments, the province is poised to create over 50,000 construction and long-term job opportunities. Notably, these projects are inclusive of partnerships with First Nations communities, either as supporters, partners, or investors.

Supporting Industries for Long-Term Success

Acknowledging the ongoing challenges faced by businesses amidst trade tensions, Eby outlined key strategies to further support B.C.’s economic sectors. The BC NDP’s future initiatives include collaborating with the federal government to establish a new B.C. shipyard in collaboration with industry stakeholders, generating thousands of job opportunities and bolstering national defense capabilities. Additionally, the plan involves making the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund a permanent fixture with annual funding of $60 million, dedicated to assisting tariff-affected forestry mills in modernizing operations, safeguarding jobs, and expanding market reach. Furthermore, efforts will be made to enhance food processing capabilities on suitable land within the Agricultural Land Reserve, fostering local job creation and promoting the processing of B.C. food products domestically.

By solidifying these commitments, Eby aims to fortify B.C.’s economic resilience and position the province for sustained growth and prosperity in the face of evolving global challenges.
