Erik Thun: Fifth hybrid vessel touches water at Dutch
Erik Thun Launches New Eco-Friendly Cargo Vessel
Erik Thun has unveiled its latest addition to the Lake Vänern Max series, a new eco-friendly vessel named Kolland, at the Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands. The launch event took place on September 5, 2025, marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping in Northern Europe. Kolland is the fifth ship in a series of six designed to enhance environmentally responsible transport across the region.
Innovative Design for Sustainable Shipping
The Kolland vessel is part of Erik Thun’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable shipping practices. This newbuilding boasts a deadweight tonnage of 5,100 dwt and is specifically engineered for navigating the Trollhattan canal and locks, which link Sweden’s inland lakes to the North Sea near Gothenburg. As the fourth generation of general cargo bulkers, Kolland features two cargo holds and incorporates numerous design enhancements aimed at reducing environmental impact.

Among the key innovations are a nozzled propeller, reduced engine output, and hybrid technology that includes a battery pack. These features work together to optimize energy efficiency and minimize emissions during operation. The vessel’s design also includes an optimized bulb form and transom shape, along with closed bridge wings, further contributing to its eco-friendly profile.
Earlier this year, Ferus Smit launched Tidan, the fourth vessel in the Lake Vänern Max series, which also utilizes a hybrid propulsion system. This system allows the ship to operate on both battery power and traditional fuel, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport. With Kolland now in the water, Erik Thun continues to lead the way in sustainable shipping solutions for Northern Europe.
