Estonian Patrol Boat Capsizes in Mediterranean, Four Injured

In a troubling incident on Monday, an Estonian patrol boat participating in a joint operation with the EU border agency sank in the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in injuries to four individuals, including the Estonian ambassador to Greece. The accident took place near the Greek island of Megisti, close to the Turkish coast, around 4:20 p.m. local time.

Details of the Incident

The sinking involved a three-member crew from the Estonian border guard, who were conducting operations alongside a local border guard and a guest. According to a statement from the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), all five individuals on board sustained injuries during the incident. Four of them were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment, while Ambassador Karin Rannu was reported to have suffered minor injuries.

PPA Director General Veiko Kommusaar described the situation as serious and confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are underway. One crew member was able to call for help, prompting a swift response from the island’s coast guard.

Emergency services acted quickly, with four individuals airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. The PPA has indicated that two of the injured border guards are in serious condition. The agency expressed its hopes for a speedy recovery for all affected by this unfortunate event.

Ongoing Investigation and Response

The PPA is currently focused on determining the exact cause of the capsizing. As the investigation unfolds, officials are expected to provide further updates on the health status of the injured and the operational implications for the Estonian border guard. The incident raises concerns about the safety protocols in place during joint maritime operations, particularly in challenging environments like the Mediterranean.

As the situation develops, the Estonian government and relevant authorities are likely to review their operational procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The involvement of high-ranking officials, such as Ambassador Rannu, underscores the seriousness of the event and its potential impact on international maritime cooperation.
