Estrella Resources Launches Manganese Extraction in Timor-Leste
Estrella Resources Ltd (ASX:ESR) has officially commenced extraction activities at its Ira Miri manganese project in Timor-Leste, with plans to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of manganese ore for market evaluation. This significant step aims to bolster relationships with potential long-term offtake partners and enhance the company’s presence in the region, known for its high-grade, low-impurity ore. The extraction marks a pivotal moment as it represents one of the first economic mineral bulk extractions under Timor-Leste’s modern Mining Code.
Local Operations and Equipment Mobilization
Estrella Resources is utilizing a fully local contractor to carry out the extraction, employing a substantial fleet that includes three production excavators, a loader, a backhoe, two bulldozers, and 12 community dump trucks equipped for wet-season operations. The company has reported that operations are advancing from multiple bench levels to expedite the development of the pit, with the first exposure of manganese ore expected in the coming days. Estrella’s geological and engineering teams are closely monitoring the extraction process, ensuring that metallurgical, quality, and commercial assessments are maintained throughout the operation. The initial mining phase is set to run on a 12-hour day shift, with plans to introduce a night shift within a week.
The extraction plan focuses on a well-defined pit that targets previously identified high-grade mineralization. Notable intersections include EMDD002, which recorded 8.05 meters at 53% manganese, and EMDD033, with 11.97 meters at 28.9% manganese. The pit is projected to reach a maximum depth of approximately 15 meters, with a total excavation volume of around 85,000 cubic meters. Estrella has committed to environmentally responsible practices, including the separate storage of topsoil for future rehabilitation efforts.
Logistics and Future Plans
Estrella has outlined a comprehensive logistics plan for the transportation of stockpiled manganese ore. Material will be moved approximately 17 kilometers from the Stage 1 pit head stockpile to the former Lautem airstrip, where a decommissioned fish-processing facility features an existing barge landing site, known as the LCT port site. The ore will be loaded onto a barge for offshore shipping and subsequent transfer to a bulk carrier.
Looking ahead, Estrella plans to transfer the MEL-CA_ZA001 concession into its joint venture company, Estrella Murak Rai Timor Lda. The company will also conduct sampling and assaying of the mined ore to create a marketing Product Specification Sheet, while actively engaging with prospective buyers for sale and export opportunities. This strategic approach is expected to enhance Estrella’s market position and contribute to the economic development of Timor-Leste.
