Faster, greener shipping route launched in Vietnam

Mekong Express Launches, Slashes Cargo Transit Times

DP World, in collaboration with VIMC Container Lines Joint Stock Company, has unveiled the Mekong Express, a new coastal and river transport service that promises to reduce cargo transit times by an impressive 70%. This innovative service connects the inland port of Cai Cui with the deepwater port of Cai Mep, cutting travel time from 48 hours to just 15 hours. The new route not only shortens the distance but also offers a more sustainable solution for cargo shippers in Vietnam.

Transforming Cargo Transport in Vietnam

The Mekong Express service utilizes a combined route that reduces the traditional distance of approximately 367 kilometers to around 200 kilometers. This significant reduction in travel distance translates into faster delivery times, making it a more efficient option for businesses. The service operates twice weekly and is designed to accommodate both dry and refrigerated containers, with a capacity of several hundred twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per voyage.

In addition to enhancing speed and efficiency, the Mekong Express is also a greener alternative to traditional road transport. According to DP World, the new service generates 60% fewer carbon emissions compared to road freight. This commitment to sustainability is further underscored by the implementation of real-time cargo tracking and carbon monitoring technologies. Both DP World and VIMC Lines have set an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2026.

Project on expansion, establishment of marine protected areas approved

The launch of the Mekong Express is expected to bolster connectivity between southern Vietnam’s two key economic regions: the Mekong Delta Key Economic Region and the Southern Key Economic Region. Together, these areas are vital to the country’s industrial output and export activities. Glen Hilton, CEO and Managing Director of DP World Asia Pacific, emphasized the company’s dedication to creating a seamless supply chain ecosystem in Vietnam, highlighting the importance of this new service in supporting economic development across the nation.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, DP World plans to expand the Mekong Express service by adding stops at Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) and Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port, further enhancing its operational capabilities. This expansion will not only improve service efficiency but also strengthen the overall logistics network in the region.

As Vietnam continues to grow as a significant player in the Asia Pacific trade landscape, the Mekong Express is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the increasing demand for reliable and efficient cargo transport solutions. With its focus on sustainability and operational excellence, this new service is set to transform the logistics landscape in southern Vietnam.
