First Hybrid Waterjet Ferries Set to Launch
The first hybrid passenger ferries in the United States, powered by waterjet propulsion, are ready to enter service in Savannah, Georgia. Developed by Marine Jet Power in collaboration with Derecktor Shipyards New York, these innovative vessels will enhance public transport for Chatham Area Transit. The ferries, named Juliette Gordon Low II and Susie King Taylor II, are designed to provide a sustainable and efficient commuting option for locals and tourists alike.
Innovative Design and Technology
The two ferries each measure 65 feet (20 meters) in length and feature a welded aluminum hull. They are equipped with MJP UltraJet 305 waterjets and powered by Cummins 6.7L marine diesel engines, allowing them to reach a maximum speed of 11 knots. The hybrid-electric propulsion system utilizes the BAE HybriGen Power System, which optimizes fuel consumption while significantly reducing emissions and noise pollution. High-capacity XALT Lithium-Ion batteries support the hybrid system, ensuring efficient operation and minimal environmental impact.
Marine Jet Power, based in Sweden, emphasizes that these vessels represent a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transportation. The serial hybrid system enables optimized power management, leading to increased efficiency and a lower environmental footprint. The advantages of waterjet propulsion, such as shallow draft, exceptional maneuverability, and enhanced fuel efficiency, make these ferries an ideal solution for urban waterways.
The ferries will operate on short, continuous routes connecting three local landings: City Hall Landing, Trade Center Landing, and Waving Girl Landing. Each vessel can accommodate up to 149 passengers, providing a smooth and quiet commute. Kevin Kirby, President and Regional Director of Marine Jet Power Americas, noted that the waterjets’ maneuverability is particularly beneficial for the operational challenges faced by Chatham Area Transit, including frequent docking and varying currents.
Built by Derecktor Shipyards in Mamaroneck, New York, the Juliette Gordon Low II launched on November 6, 2024, followed by the Susie King Taylor II on December 4, 2024. Both vessels were christened in New York on January 7, 2025. With a history of launching six hybrid-electric commercial vessels in the past decade, Derecktor Shipyards showcases its expertise in innovative marine construction. Erik Derecktor, New Construction Commercial Manager, expressed pride in partnering with MJP and Chatham Area Transit on this groundbreaking project. The ferries are currently en route to Savannah and will begin daily passenger service in the coming weeks.
