Fishing Boat Virginia Wave Runs Aground in Narragansett Bay, Diesel Spill Under Investigation
Fishing Boat Virginia Wave Runs Aground in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay
Early in the morning on November 18, a fishing boat named Virginia Wave ran into trouble in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay. The Virginia Wave is a 24-meter-long boat, weighing about 168 gross tons. The incident happened south of Jamestown, Rhode Island, during low tide when the water level was lower than usual. This low tide may have played a part in the boat getting stuck.
Once the Virginia Wave was aground, the boat’s crew quickly reached out for help, letting authorities know about their situation. The ship remained stuck in the shallow waters for several hours. Fortunately, at around 9 a.m., the rising tide lifted the water level, allowing the Virginia Wave to float freely again.

The U.S. Coast Guard has reported that the Virginia Wave released some diesel fuel into the water during the incident. This fuel spill can harm the water and wildlife, so the Coast Guard is now investigating what happened. They are looking into how much fuel was spilled and the cause of the grounding.
The good news is that no one was hurt, and everyone on board the Virginia Wave was safe. While the incident could have caused serious problems, the quick actions of the crew and the timing of the tide helped prevent further damage.
