Florida Master Naturalist Program: Protecting Florida’s Nature

The Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) is a special initiative that helps people learn about Florida’s unique natural environments. This program encourages everyone to care for and protect the state’s ecosystems. A key part of the program is the Florida Master Naturalist Program Advisory Board (FAB). The board is made up of instructors and graduates from across the state who guide the program’s growth and success.

Each year, the FAB meets four times—three times online and once in person. These meetings give members a chance to share ideas, learn new skills, and plan the program’s future.

Exploring Nature at the Annual FAB Retreat

In November, the FAB held its annual retreat at the Marine Discovery Center (MDC) in New Smyrna Beach. This retreat gave members a chance to connect, learn, and discuss conservation projects. Chad Truxall, MDC’s Executive Director and FAB President, shared MDC’s work on protecting Florida’s marine life.

Since 2001, the MDC has been a partner in teaching FMNP’s Coastal Ecosystem classes, helping over 800 people graduate as Coastal Naturalists. These graduates often become nature guides, educators, and active community members who care for Florida’s coastlines.

Marine Discovery Center: A Place for Learning and Conservation

The Marine Discovery Center is a unique facility with a rich history. The site was originally New Smyrna Beach High School, but in 2011, it became a center for marine education and conservation. This year, MDC is celebrating 27 years of working to protect Florida’s coastal environment.

During the FAB retreat, members explored MDC’s exciting restoration projects, like the Native Wildflower Garden. This garden is filled with plants that attract butterflies and provide homes for local wildlife. These native plants are low-maintenance and eco-friendly, requiring little water and no fertilizers.

Another key project is the creation of a living shoreline. What used to be a parking lot is now a thriving natural space that helps protect the salt marsh. Completed in July 2024, this area is home to a growing mangrove forest. Visitors can now kayak, watch wildlife, and enjoy breathtaking views of New Smyrna Beach and the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse from Mount Morgan.

Why Join the Florida Master Naturalist Program?

The Florida Master Naturalist Program is open to adults who want to learn more about Florida’s ecosystems. Whether for personal interest or professional growth, FMNP offers a variety of courses on Florida’s natural environment.

The program is run by the University of Florida and its partners, including UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. Together, they provide training that covers Florida’s three main ecosystems: coastal, freshwater, and uplands. Specialized courses also explore topics like invasive plants, wildlife monitoring, and restoration efforts. Participants can choose courses based on their interests and take them in any order.

One of the program’s lead instructors, Dr. Katherine Clements, has been a strong advocate for educating people about Florida’s environment. She encourages everyone to join the program and become advocates for nature.
