France’s First Hydrogen-Powered Inland Cargo Vessel Enters Service
The Sogestran Group has made a significant advancement in sustainable transportation by commissioning France’s first hydrogen-powered river vessel, the Zulu 06. This innovative vessel was officially launched on the Seine River in Paris, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. The Zulu 06 is not just a technological marvel; it represents a new approach to urban logistics and environmental responsibility in river transport.
Innovative Design and Capabilities
The Zulu 06 measures 55 meters in length and boasts a cargo capacity of 400 tons. Its primary purpose is to transport small deck cargoes for clients operating within the bustling urban landscape of Paris. The design of the vessel was executed by LMG Marin, a company known for its expertise in maritime engineering. The propulsion system, which is crucial for the vessel’s operation, was supplied by ABB Marine & Ports. This system includes two 200 kW hydrogen fuel cells provided by Ballard, which are essential for the vessel’s zero-emission capabilities.
One of the standout features of the Zulu 06 is its ability to carry 300 kilograms of compressed hydrogen. This amount is sufficient for approximately seven days of operation before needing a refill. The introduction of this vessel is a groundbreaking step for river transport in France, as it aims to establish a clean and efficient business model for urban goods transportation. The project is part of a broader initiative to promote green mobility and reduce the carbon footprint of logistics in major cities.
A Collaborative Effort Towards Sustainability
The development of the Zulu 06 is a product of the EU-funded FLAGSHIPS initiative, a six-year program focused on advancing zero-emission waterborne transport. The construction of the vessel took place in Romania, while the outfitting of its propulsion system was completed in France. This transnational collaboration highlights the importance of European cooperation in achieving sustainability goals.
François Durovray, the French Minister of Transport, attended the vessel’s inauguration and emphasized the significance of this project. He stated, “With the launch of the Zulu 06, we witness a major breakthrough for river transport and the energy transition in France.” Durovray’s remarks underscore the vessel’s role as a model for future initiatives that combine public and private efforts to promote green mobility.
Pascal Girardet, Chairman and CEO of the Sogestran Group, also commented on the importance of this innovation. He noted that while the hydrogen industry is still developing, projects like the Zulu 06 play a crucial role in accelerating its acceptance and integration into the market. The next vessel in the FLAGSHIPS program, the FPS Waal, will further this mission by converting a conventional inland container feeder into a zero-emissions vessel for operations on the Rhine.
