Fuel Tank Recovery at Tuttle Creek Lake Completed

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, announced the successful recovery of a submerged fuel tank at Tuttle Creek Lake on March 18. The tank, which contained diesel fuel, was found to have leaked, prompting immediate containment and cleanup efforts in the area.

Containment and Cleanup Efforts Underway

Following the recovery of the 1,800-gallon fuel tank, officials confirmed that the fuel release was contained within a designated cove. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that response crews are now focused on cleanup operations to mitigate any environmental impact. Initial testing conducted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) revealed no fuel-related contaminants in the water samples taken from the affected cove. However, further testing is being conducted downstream to ensure the safety of the water quality.

A comprehensive water quality monitoring plan is currently in place, with daily sampling being conducted to track any changes in the environment. While the containment boom surrounding the incident site is set to be removed, additional booms will remain in the cove to assist with ongoing cleanup efforts. The EPA will transition the remaining response activities to the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the KDHE, who will jointly oversee the situation moving forward.

As a precautionary measure, Tuttle Creek Cove remains closed to the public until further notice, ensuring the safety of visitors while cleanup operations continue.

Background on the Incident

The submerged fuel tank was reportedly dislodged from a barge due to heavy winds and wave action earlier in the week. Upon discovery, officials quickly deployed containment measures to prevent further leakage and potential contamination of the surrounding waters. The EPA and local authorities have been actively involved in the recovery and cleanup process, emphasizing the importance of environmental protection and public safety.

As the situation develops, officials remain vigilant in monitoring the area and ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to restore the environment to its natural state. The community is encouraged to stay informed about the ongoing efforts and the status of Tuttle Creek Cove.
