Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK Forge Hydrogen Safety Partnership

Fukui Seisakusho Co., Ltd. and ClassNK have entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at developing ultra-high pressure safety relief valves for hydrogen dual-fuel engines. The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony at the Gastech 2025 exhibition in Milan, Italy. This collaboration builds on a previous agreement made in 2023, which focused on the installation of safety relief valves for liquefied hydrogen carriers.
Joint Efforts to Enhance Hydrogen Fuel Safety
The partnership between Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK is a pivotal step towards enhancing safety measures in hydrogen fuel systems. In 2023, the two companies agreed to conduct a study on the installation of safety relief valves for cargo tanks on liquefied hydrogen carriers. This initiative has already yielded results, with the issuance of a type approval certificate for the PILOT-type low-pressure safety relief valve (PSL-MD type) earlier this year.
Building on this success, the new MOU focuses on the development of ultra-high pressure safety relief valves specifically designed for hydrogen dual-fuel engines. These valves must meet stringent technical requirements, including material resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and superior sealing performance. Such advancements are crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of hydrogen fuel supply systems.
Each company has defined roles in this collaboration. Fukui Seisakusho will spearhead the development of RPS-type safety relief valves that are compatible with high pressure, while ClassNK will oversee the review process for these valves based on established regulations upon receiving applications for type approval. This partnership aims to facilitate the broader adoption of hydrogen as a fuel source, contributing to the transition towards cleaner energy solutions.
Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions
Through this collaboration, Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK are committed to advancing the implementation of hydrogen propulsion systems. As the world increasingly turns to sustainable energy sources, the development of safe and efficient hydrogen technologies is becoming more critical. The joint efforts of these two companies represent a significant move towards ensuring that hydrogen fuel systems are both safe and effective for future applications.
This partnership not only highlights the growing importance of hydrogen in the energy sector but also sets a precedent for future collaborations aimed at enhancing safety and performance in emerging technologies. As the industry evolves, the contributions of Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK will play a vital role in shaping the future of hydrogen fuel systems.
