Funchal, the charming capital of Madeira, is gearing up for a spectacular New Year’s celebration. On December 31, 2024, the port city will host 11 cruise ships, providing guests with prime views of the midnight fireworks display. This event marks a festive occasion as thousands gather to ring in 2025 in style. The arrival of these vessels not only enhances the holiday spirit but also boosts the local economy and tourism sector.
Exciting Lineup of Cruise Ships
The New Year’s Eve celebration in Funchal will feature an impressive lineup of ships from nine different cruise companies. Notable participants include AIDA Cruises, Cunard Line, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Marella Cruises, Phoenix Reisen, P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises, and TUI Cruises. Each ship brings its unique flair and a diverse group of guests eager to experience the festivities.
Among the fleet, the largest ship is the Queen Anne, which recently entered service with Cunard Line. This luxurious vessel can accommodate 3,000 guests and is on a 14-night cruise to the Canary Islands. It arrived in Funchal on the morning of December 31, just in time for the celebrations. Two ships from TUI Cruises, the Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 7, will also be present, bringing nearly 6,000 guests to the festivities. These ships cater primarily to the German market and are part of their Atlantic itineraries.
Other notable ships include Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa and Phoenix Reisen’s Amera. The AIDAblu, which is on a seven-night cruise to Spain and Portugal, will also join the gathering. Additionally, Saga Cruises will have its entire fleet, including the Spirit of Adventure and the Spirit of Discovery, in attendance. P&O Cruises and Marella Cruises will contribute to the celebration with the Aurora and the Marella Explorer, respectively.
