Future Tech delivers Nokia private 5G for Maher Terminals in NYC

Nokia Launches Private 5G for Maritime and Defense

Nokia is making significant strides in the deployment of private 5G technology, partnering with Future Technologies to enhance operations at Maher Terminals in the Port of Elizabeth, New Jersey. This state-of-the-art system aims to optimize yard management, crane operations, and gate services at one of the largest marine container terminals in the U.S. Simultaneously, Nokia has introduced ruggedized 5G communication solutions tailored for military applications, reinforcing its commitment to both maritime and defense sectors.

Enhancing Maritime Operations at Maher Terminals

Maher Terminals, a key player in the New York/New Jersey maritime complex, is set to benefit from a private 5G edge deployment by Nokia, facilitated by system integrator Future Technologies. The new system will specifically enhance various terminal operations, including yard management, crane operations, and gate services. With a 450-acre facility that handles approximately two million containers annually, Maher Terminals plays a crucial role in cargo movement within the New York metropolitan area.

The deployment will utilize Nokia’s Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) alongside its Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) computing system. This comprehensive setup will also incorporate industrial devices, device management tools, and digital twin software to streamline operations. The terminal’s management aims to leverage real-time data and analytics to improve operational efficiency and ensure smoother cargo handling processes.

Laura Markham, the Chief Information Officer at Maher Terminals, emphasized the importance of this technology for enhancing connectivity, security, and scalability. “The private wireless aspects also helped us meet our cybersecurity objectives in securing port operations,” she stated. This deployment marks a significant milestone for both Nokia and Future Technologies, as they work to create a more efficient and secure maritime operation.

Nokia’s Tactical Communication Solutions for Defense

In a parallel initiative, Nokia has unveiled two new ruggedized tactical communication solutions aimed at the defense sector. These innovations include the Mission-Safe Phone, designed for critical communications, and the Banshee 5G Tactical Radio, which acts as a portable network hub. Both products are engineered to endure harsh conditions and are vital for modern military operations.

The Mission-Safe Phone features a long-lifecycle chipset and is customizable to meet diverse operational needs. It is built to military specifications, ensuring durability and reliability in various environments. Meanwhile, the Banshee 5G Tactical Radio offers robust security features and high-speed connectivity, enabling military teams to maintain effective communication in challenging situations.

David de Lancellotti, Vice President of Enterprise Campus Edge Sales at Nokia, expressed enthusiasm about deploying their edge platform, which integrates devices, edge computing, and private wireless connectivity. This technology will not only bolster operational efficiency but also enhance visibility across military operations. As Nokia expands its defense portfolio, it continues to solidify its position as a leader in advanced communication solutions for both maritime and military applications.
