GC Rieber in battery-powered bulker move
Norway Launches Groundbreaking Electric Bulk Vessel

GC Rieber Shipping, a prominent Norwegian shipping company, has announced an innovative project to develop a fully electric, battery-powered dry bulk vessel. This initiative is a collaboration among GC Rieber Shipping, GC Rieber Minerals, and Franzefoss Minerals, aimed at enhancing shortsea operations along the Norwegian coastline. The project is significantly supported by a $9.5 million grant from Enova, Norway’s government agency focused on promoting clean energy technologies.
Innovative Design and Funding Support
The new vessel, being constructed under GC Rieber’s subsidiary Polar Energy Shipco, will incorporate advanced battery packs with a capacity exceeding 20 MWh. Additionally, it will utilize rotor sails to optimize energy efficiency during voyages. Einar Ytredal, CEO of GC Rieber Shipping, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “This support from Enova enables us to accelerate the transition to zero-emission shipping.” He expressed pride in collaborating with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals to lead the charge toward more sustainable maritime transport solutions.

The electric bulk vessel will be operated by K. Sætre & Sønner, a well-established company known for its expertise in transporting bulk and general cargo across the North Sea. This partnership is expected to enhance operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Moreover, as part of the project, GC Rieber Minerals will also receive support to develop a shore-based charging facility at Laksevågneset, further promoting the use of electric vessels in Norwegian waters.
