Geely floats world’s first methanol-hydrogen electric riverboat

Geely Launches World's First Methanol-Hydrogen Riverboat

Chinese automotive leader Geely Holding has taken a groundbreaking step in sustainable shipping with the introduction of the Yuanchun 001, the first methanol-hydrogen electric multi-purpose riverboat globally. Unveiled in Hangzhou, this innovative vessel marks a significant milestone in Geely’s two-decade commitment to advancing methanol technology, representing its inaugural full-scale venture into maritime applications.

Innovative Design and Environmental Benefits

The Yuanchun 001 features a sophisticated design equipped with dual 150 kW motors, two 280 kW methanol generators, and a robust 258 kWh lithium battery system. This configuration enables the riverboat to achieve an impressive operational range of nearly 1,500 kilometers. Furthermore, the vessel offers versatility with multiple operational modes, including hybrid, generator-only, pure electric, and shore charging options.

Geely has stated that the new riverboat consumes 42% less energy compared to traditional diesel-powered vessels, making it a significant advancement in eco-friendly transport. When powered by green methanol, the Yuanchun 001 is designed to produce net-zero carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle. The company emphasizes that this successful launch demonstrates that river transport can be cleaner, quieter, and more cost-effective.

The development of the Yuanchun 001 is part of Geely’s broader methanol ecosystem, which encompasses carbon capture, production, transportation, and refueling. By mid-2025, China is expected to have over 800 operational methanol refueling stations, with projections indicating growth to more than 4,000 by 2027. Geely argues that this infrastructure can be implemented more economically than hydrogen or fast-charging networks.

Expanding Methanol Technology on Land and Sea

Geely’s commitment to methanol technology extends beyond maritime applications; the company has also introduced over 50,000 methanol-hydrogen hybrid vehicles on the roads. These vehicles have collectively logged 23 billion kilometers, demonstrating operating costs that are 32% to 52% lower than their gasoline or diesel counterparts. This successful integration of methanol technology into both shipping and automotive sectors underscores Geely’s vision for a sustainable future.

As the company continues to innovate and expand its green initiatives, the launch of the Yuanchun 001 serves as a testament to its dedication to reducing carbon footprints and promoting cleaner transportation solutions across various industries.
