General Dynamics Electric Boat Secures $1.3 Billion Contract for Virginia-Class Submarine Materials

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $1.3 billion contract modification to procure long lead time materials for the construction of Virginia Class Block VI nuclear-powered submarines.

General Dynamics Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, has been granted this significant contract modification, enabling the company to acquire essential materials required for the Virginia Class Block VI submarines. This announcement was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Defense contract award.

“This contract modification sends a crucial demand signal, enabling our suppliers to invest in the capacity and materials needed to increase production volume. Consistent funding for the supply base is essential to achieve the high-rate production the Navy requires of the entire submarine enterprise,” stated Kevin Graney, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Composite Material in Marine Application

The Virginia-class submarines are specifically designed to meet the diverse mission requirements of the 21st century, including anti-submarine warfare, surface ship warfare, and special operations support. As the prime contractor and lead design yard, General Dynamics Electric Boat constructs these submarines in collaboration with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.

General Dynamics Electric Boat specializes in the design, construction, repair, and modernization of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy. The company is headquartered in Groton, Connecticut, and employs over 23,000 individuals.
