Ghana Welcomes Major Bulk Carrier to Boost Exports

In a significant development for Ghana’s mineral export sector, the Ghana Manganese Company, in collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and COSCO Shipping Lines, welcomed the bulk carrier MV CBS Years at the Port of Takoradi on Tuesday. This vessel, with a deadweight capacity of 300,000 tonnes, is part of a strategic initiative aimed at increasing production and exports to 10 million tonnes by 2026. The arrival of this ship is expected to enhance shipping efficiency and elevate bulk shipment volumes, thereby strengthening Ghana’s export receipts.

Strategic Enhancements and Training Initiatives

The successful berthing of the MV CBS Years is a testament to the extensive planning and collaboration among stakeholders in Ghana’s mining and shipping sectors. Prior to the vessel’s arrival, the Ghana Manganese Company invested in advanced training for GPHA marine operations staff, including pilots, who were sent to China for specialized simulation and berthing training tailored for capesize vessels. This training focused on vessel hydraulics, mechanics, and navigation, ensuring safe operations at the port.

In addition to training, GPHA has developed Standard Operating Procedures to guide the berthing and loading processes for large vessels, emphasizing safety and predictability. These measures are crucial for minimizing operational risks and reducing downtime at the port. Sun Yuanwei, Deputy Managing Director of Ghana Manganese Company, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating that it marks a new phase for mining logistics and port operations in Ghana.

James Richmond Qayson, Director of the Port of Takoradi, noted that this operation reflects the successful implementation of the Port Expansion Programme initiated in 2015. He emphasized that the port is now equipped to handle large vessels and complex cargo movements efficiently. The modern conveyor ship-loading system, commissioned in 2022, has drastically reduced loading times from up to 21 days to just five days, with operations managed by local engineers and technicians.

Future Directions and Infrastructure Needs

As Ghana positions itself as a key player in the manganese export market, the need for continued investment in infrastructure is paramount. Nana Kobina Nketsia V, President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, underscored the importance of enhancing rail transport to facilitate bulk cargo movements. He argued that rail remains the most efficient method for transporting minerals to the port and requires ongoing attention and investment to support regional planning and logistics.

The arrival of the MV CBS Years not only signifies a boost in Ghana’s export capabilities but also reinforces the Port of Takoradi’s role as a vital hub for mineral logistics in the sub-region. With strategic investments and training initiatives in place, Ghana is poised to enhance its position in the global mining industry.
