Ghana Welcomes MV CBS Years: A Milestone for Maritime Industry

Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), in collaboration with Cosco Shipping Lines and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), is set to inaugurate the MV CBS Years, a colossal vessel with a deadweight tonnage of 300,000. The historic berthing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Takoradi Port. This event marks a significant milestone for both Ghana’s maritime and extractive industries, signaling a pivotal moment for GMC.

The arrival of the MV CBS Years aligns with GMC’s ambitious goal of achieving a production and export target of 10 million tonnes for 2026. This vessel is expected to significantly enhance bulk export volumes through Takoradi Port, which will, in turn, boost export revenues for GPHA and positively impact Ghana’s overall economic performance. The inauguration ceremony will draw senior government officials, industry leaders, international shipping partners, and key stakeholders from the maritime and logistics sectors, highlighting the importance of this achievement.

Preparations for Safe Operations

In anticipation of the MV CBS Years’ arrival, GMC has undertaken extensive preparations to ensure the highest safety and operational standards. Selected GPHA marine operations staff, including pilots, were sponsored to undergo advanced simulation training and berthing exercises in China. These exercises were specifically designed to replicate the complex hydrodynamic and navigational requirements associated with cape-size vessels, ensuring safe and controlled berthing and cargo loading operations under local command.

To further enhance operational readiness, GPHA has developed a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide the vessel’s movements and activities at the port. Additionally, GMC and GPHA have engaged a third-party firm to conduct detailed risk assessments, which include digital simulations of berthing and unberthing maneuvers. Real-time UAV surveillance will also be implemented to monitor operations and ensure safety throughout the vessel’s stay.

The inauguration ceremony not only commemorates this unprecedented achievement but also emphasizes a shared commitment to infrastructure development, professional capacity building, and cross-sector collaboration. GMC asserts that the successful berthing of the MV CBS Years reflects its dedication to contributing to sustainable national economic growth while positioning Takoradi Port as a competitive hub for large-scale bulk shipping in the region.
