Ghana Welcomes MV CBS Years: A Milestone for Maritime Industry

Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), in collaboration with Cosco Shipping Lines and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), is set to celebrate the arrival of the MV CBS Years, a colossal vessel with a deadweight tonnage of 300,000. The inauguration and welcome ceremony will take place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Takoradi Port. This historic event marks a significant achievement for Ghana’s maritime and extractive sectors, indicating a pivotal moment for GMC.

The arrival of the MV CBS Years aligns with GMC’s ambitious target of producing and exporting 10 million tonnes in 2026. This vessel is expected to significantly enhance bulk export volumes through Takoradi Port, thereby increasing export revenues for GPHA and positively impacting Ghana’s overall economic performance. The successful integration of this vessel into operations is anticipated to bolster the country’s position in the global shipping and logistics landscape.

Extensive Preparations for Safe Operations

In preparation for the MV CBS Years’ arrival, GMC has undertaken extensive measures to ensure safety and operational efficiency. Selected GPHA marine operations staff, including pilots, received advanced simulation training and berthing exercises in China. These training sessions were designed to replicate the complex hydrodynamic and navigational challenges associated with cape-size vessels, ensuring safe and predictable berthing and cargo loading operations under local command.

To further enhance operational readiness, GPHA has developed a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide the vessel’s movements and activities at the port. Additionally, GMC and GPHA have engaged a third-party firm to conduct detailed risk assessments, including digital simulations of berthing and unberthing maneuvers. Real-time UAV surveillance will also be utilized to monitor operations, ensuring safety throughout the vessel’s stay.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to attract senior government officials, industry leaders, international shipping partners, and key stakeholders from the maritime and logistics sectors. This event will not only commemorate the successful arrival of the MV CBS Years but also highlight a collective commitment to infrastructure development, professional capacity building, and the long-term growth of maritime trade in Ghana.

Ghana’s potential as a maritime logistics hub for West Africa

Commitment to Sustainable Economic Growth

Ghana Manganese Company emphasizes that the successful berthing of the MV CBS Years reflects its dedication to contributing to sustainable national economic growth. The company aims to position Takoradi Port as a competitive hub for large-scale bulk shipping in the region. This initiative underscores GMC’s commitment to enhancing the maritime industry’s capabilities while fostering collaboration across various sectors.

As Ghana continues to develop its maritime infrastructure, the arrival of the MV CBS Years serves as a testament to the country’s potential in the global shipping arena. The collaboration between GMC, Cosco Shipping Lines, and GPHA exemplifies a unified approach to advancing the maritime sector, ultimately benefiting the economy and creating opportunities for growth and development.
