Gibraltar Seizes Cocaine Hidden on Bulker Using New

Gibraltar's Underwater Drones Thwart Major Drug Smuggling

Gibraltar has made headlines with a significant drug bust, showcasing the effectiveness of its newly acquired underwater drones. HM Customs successfully intercepted a shipment of cocaine hidden aboard the Chinese-owned bulker, Great Zhou, during a routine inspection on April 30, 2024. The operation underscores Gibraltar’s commitment to combating drug trafficking in the region.

Successful Operation Unveils Hidden Cocaine

The bulker Great Zhou, weighing 39,744 deadweight tons, docked in Gibraltar for a bunkering stop after traveling from Santos, Brazil. During a standard check, HM Customs utilized its advanced underwater drones, which were acquired in December 2023, to survey the vessel’s hull. This innovative technology allowed customs officials to inspect areas that are typically difficult to access.

Gibraltar divers find cocaine stashed on cargo ship

While examining the underwater sections, officials grew suspicious of one of the vessel’s sea chests located on the port side. Divers were deployed to investigate further and discovered four packages concealed within the sea chest. Upon retrieval, it was confirmed that the packages contained a staggering 120 kilograms of cocaine. This discovery led to the immediate detention of the vessel and the crew was subsequently interviewed regarding the illicit cargo.

After the investigation, the Great Zhou was allowed to continue to its scheduled port call in Italy, as officials believed the crew was unaware of the drugs hidden on the vessel. Authorities suspect that the narcotics were intended for distribution in another European country, but Gibraltar’s swift action successfully disrupted the smuggling operation.

Government Support for Customs Efforts

The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, the Hon Fabian Picardo, praised HM Customs for their successful operation, emphasizing the importance of investing in resources to combat drug crime. He stated, “This is why my Government has made serious investment in HM Customs to support their crucial work in combatting drug crime, with real results for Gibraltar and for other countries that these drugs are intended for.”

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking in the region and the proactive measures being taken by Gibraltar’s authorities. The use of underwater drones represents a significant advancement in customs operations, enhancing their capability to detect and prevent smuggling attempts. As Gibraltar continues to strengthen its border security, officials remain vigilant against the ever-evolving tactics of drug traffickers.
