Glamox Wins Contracts to Light New Suez Canal Salvage Tugs

Glamox to Light Up Suez Canal Tugs with Advanced Maritime Solutions

Glamox Wins Major Lighting Contract for Suez Canal Tugs

Glamox AS, a well-known name in the lighting industry, has secured a big contract with Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt. This deal will provide advanced lighting systems for two new salvage tugs being built for the Suez Canal Authority. These tugs are vital for keeping the Suez Canal running smoothly, ensuring that global trade flows without interruption.

Kongsberg Maritime, a leading company in ship design, is responsible for the technical plans of the tugs. Their expertise ensures that these vessels meet high safety and performance standards.

Why Salvage Tugs Are So Important

Salvage tugs are special ships built to handle emergencies at sea. They rescue other vessels in trouble, such as those that have sunk, run aground, or are stranded. The new tugs under construction will follow Kongsberg’s UT 722 CDT design. Each tug will be 71.6 meters long and weigh around 200 tonnes. They will have powerful engines and advanced thrusters that allow them to move accurately, even in the narrow Suez Canal.

The Suez Canal is one of the world’s busiest waterways, with goods worth $10 billion passing through it every day. Salvage tugs are critical to keeping this important route open. Rear Admiral Hossam El-Din Ezzat Kotb, CEO of Alexandria Shipyard, stressed how vital good lighting is for these tugs. He said, “Salvage operations can happen anytime, and it’s a race against time. Reliable lighting is essential.”

Advanced Lighting Systems for Safer Operations

The lighting solutions provided by Glamox will include Luminell RLX floodlights and Norselight searchlights for bright illumination during nighttime operations. For the inside areas like engine rooms, Glamox DL-70 downlights and TL60 watertight linear luminaires will be installed. Aqua Signal Series 75 navigation lights will guide the tugs safely, while NL95 touch-screen controllers will allow easy control of the lighting.

Tommy Stranden, Chief Sales & Commercial Officer at Glamox, expressed pride in supporting the Suez Canal’s infrastructure. “The Suez Canal is crucial to world trade, and we are proud that our lighting will help keep it running,” he said.

The installation of Glamox’s advanced lighting systems is expected to be completed by 2025 and 2026, when the tugs will be ready for use. This contract shows Glamox’s dedication to quality and highlights the importance of good lighting in maritime safety and efficiency.
