Greece and Japan discuss closer cooperation in shipping, ports and shipbuilding
Greece and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their longstanding maritime partnership, focusing on key areas such as shipping, shipbuilding, ports, and investment.
Maritime Leaders Meet at Thessaloniki International Fair
The Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, welcomed Japan’s Minister of State for Economic Security and Minister in charge of the Development Strategy, Minoru Kiuchi, at the Port of Thessaloniki during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). Japan was the honored country at the event.
Kikilias emphasized the strong ties between Greece and Japan in the maritime sector, highlighting Greek shipowners’ significant orders with Japanese shipyards known for their quality and technical expertise.
Bilateral Talks Focus on Strategic Cooperation
The Ministers engaged in extensive discussions on strengthening cooperation in shipping, shipbuilding, and ports, as well as increasing mutual investment and enhancing cooperation between their coast guard services. Discussions also revolved around shipping decarbonization, with Kikilias acknowledging Japan’s constructive role in relevant International Maritime Organization (IMO) talks.
During a sea visit, Kikilias showcased the Port of Thessaloniki’s capabilities and strategic importance as a regional hub. The ministers discussed the port’s expansion projects and the city’s growing cruise activity, presenting new economic development opportunities.
Shared Values Drive Bilateral Relations
The Japanese Minister highlighted Japan’s development strategy, emphasizing the potential for closer collaboration in ports, logistics, and shipbuilding. He underscored the common values and principles shared by both countries, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral ties in the face of current geopolitical challenges.
Both Ministers agreed that their shared values, adherence to international law, and strong bilateral relations form a robust foundation for further enhancing their already excellent cooperation. Japan expressed its interest in boosting foreign direct investment between the two nations.
The meeting at the Thessaloniki International Fair marked a significant step in solidifying the maritime partnership between Greece and Japan, paving the way for deeper collaboration in crucial sectors for both nations.
