Greek Bulk Carrier Sinks After Houthi Attack

In a tragic incident in the Red Sea, the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Eternity C has sunk following an attack by Houthi forces off the coast of Yemen. Reports indicate that the vessel was struck by multiple rocket-propelled grenades, leading to significant damage and a rescue operation for the crew. As of now, five crew members have been rescued, but the situation remains dire with fatalities and injuries reported.
Details of the Attack and Rescue Efforts
The attack on the Eternity C occurred on July 7, when the vessel was targeted by five rocket-propelled grenades. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the ship sustained severe damage and began losing speed as it faced ongoing assaults from small craft in the area. The incident took place approximately 51 nautical miles (95 km) west of Hodeidah, a key port city in Yemen.
Following the attack, a rescue operation was initiated, resulting in the successful retrieval of five crew members. However, the situation is grim, with reports confirming that two individuals were killed in the assault. Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, Robert Wilmot Kpadeh, stated that two crew members were seriously injured, and two others remain unaccounted for. The crew consisted of 22 members, including 21 from the Philippines and one Russian national, all of whom were accompanied by armed security personnel.
As the rescue efforts continue, the Greek ERT-news television channel has reported an increase in the death toll, now standing at three, which includes one of the injured crew members. The ongoing conflict in the region has raised concerns about maritime safety and the risks faced by vessels operating in these waters.
