GTT Receives Approval in Principle from ABS for Mark III’s NH3-Ready Notation on LNG-Fuelled Vessels

Paris, 5 August 2024 – GTT, the technology expert in membrane containment systems used to transport and store liquefied gases, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS, a world-leading classification society, for the NH3-ready notation of its LNG-fuelled vessels.

This approval enables LNG tanks equipped with Mark III technology to be converted for ammonia (NH3) use aboard LNG-fuelled vessels, enhancing their versatility by allowing them to operate on another fuel in their second life. This AiP highlights GTT’s commitment to developing sustainable and flexible solutions for the maritime industry, ensuring that shipowners and operators can adapt to evolving environmental regulations and maritime standards.

David Colson, Commercial VP of GTT, said: “We are very proud to receive this new AiP, which testifies to the relevance of our Mark III technology for ammonia-fuelled ships following the extensive test campaign carried out by GTT. While the use of ammonia as fuel is still to be proven, this approval brings us a step closer to enabling multi-gas conversion on vessels fitted with GTT technologies, reinforcing our position at the forefront of sustainable maritime solutions.”

Rostom Merzouki, Global Gas Solution Director of ABS, commented: “ABS is pleased to award this AiP to GTT for their practical NH3-Ready Mark III containment system. This development aligns with our commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to alternative fuels and demonstrates the potential of Mark III technology in addressing future energy challenges.”
