GV Resolute Wreck Sinks Deeper Off Pembrokeshire Coast

The GV Resolute, a 25-meter guard boat, has been slowly sinking since it ran aground on December 11, 2022, near Aber Hywel, Pembrokeshire. Recent images reveal that the vessel is increasingly submerged, raising concerns about its environmental impact. The boat, which was stationed to support an Irish offshore wind farm, had four crew members aboard during the incident, prompting a dramatic rescue operation.

Rescue Operation Amidst Treacherous Conditions

The grounding of the GV Resolute occurred at approximately 3:28 AM on December 11. The vessel was caught in rough seas and strong winds while sheltering off the Pembrokeshire coast. In response to the emergency, both Fishguard lifeboats were deployed, along with a coastguard rescue helicopter and teams from St Davids and Fishguard. However, the challenging weather conditions made it difficult for rescuers to reach the stranded crew.

During the evacuation, one crew member fell overboard but was successfully rescued thanks to the quick actions of lifeboat helm Warren Bean. The remaining crew members were brought to safety as the vessel continued to take on water. Since that fateful night, the GV Resolute has remained stuck on the rocks, with HM Coastguard monitoring the situation closely.

Ongoing Environmental Concerns and Investigations

Following the grounding, significant efforts were made to mitigate environmental risks. By the Christmas period, around 10,000 liters of fuel and oil were removed from the vessel, alleviating concerns from local conservationists about potential pollution in the area, which is home to various seabird species.

Recent photographs taken by JC Explores show the vessel’s stern nearly submerged, with much of the deck now underwater. The UK Government’s Marine Accident Investigations Branch has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the grounding, which is still ongoing. Plans for salvage operations are in discussion, with hopes of using a floating barge or crane to recover the vessel in the future.
