Hanwha Philly Shipyard mulls joining U.S. Navy ship project
Hanwha Philly Shipyard Eyes U.S. Navy Contract

Hanwha Philly Shipyard, part of South Korea’s Hanwha Group, is actively considering a bid for the U.S. Navy’s combat support ship construction project. During a media briefing in Philadelphia, CEO David Kim revealed that discussions are underway regarding the company’s participation. With over $20 billion allocated in the U.S. defense budget for combat and support ships, Hanwha is preparing to submit necessary documentation to the Navy as it gears up for the bidding process.
Strategic Expansion into U.S. Defense Market
Hanwha Group’s acquisition of Philly Shipyard Inc. for $100 million last year marked a significant step in its global expansion strategy. The company aims to not only construct liquefied natural gas-powered container carriers and LNG ships but also to secure contracts for supplying components to U.S. Navy vessels. Long-term plans include the potential to build Navy ships, aligning with the U.S. defense budget’s focus on enhancing naval capabilities.
Lee Jong-moo, head of Hanwha Philly Shipyard, emphasized the importance of support ships in naval operations. “A fleet cannot go into battle with only attack vessels. It needs support ships as well,” he stated. He noted that the U.S. support shipbuilding capability has weakened, prompting the Navy to consider foreign shipyards for quicker production of these essential vessels.
Houthis emerge as threat global powers can no longer dismiss
The urgency of revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry has been echoed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has highlighted the need for partnerships with allies like South Korea, a leader in naval construction. In April, U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan visited Hanwha’s shipyard in Geoje to discuss potential cooperation in naval defense. Additionally, Donald Trump Jr. met with Hanwha officials in Seoul to explore partnership opportunities, further solidifying the ties between the two nations in defense manufacturing.
Preparing for the Bidding Process
As Hanwha Philly Shipyard prepares to enter the bidding process for the U.S. Navy contract, the company is focused on ensuring it meets all requirements. CEO David Kim confirmed that they are actively working on the necessary documentation to submit to the Navy. The shipyard’s capabilities align with the specifications of the planned combat support ships, making this bid a strategic opportunity for Hanwha.
The discussions surrounding the U.S. defense budget and the need for support ships underscore the shifting dynamics in naval defense. With the U.S. considering foreign partnerships to bolster its shipbuilding capacity, Hanwha’s bid could play a crucial role in addressing these needs. The outcome of this bidding process may not only impact Hanwha’s future but also the broader landscape of U.S. naval capabilities.
