HD Hyundai brings welding automation to Huntington Ingalls

In a bid to enhance productivity and foster cooperation, HD Hyundai has initiated a pilot project at the Ingalls Shipbuilding facility in Mississippi, owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries. The project focuses on the digitization of welding processes through the introduction of advanced welding technology.

Collaboration for Productivity Enhancement

The collaboration between HD Hyundai and Ingalls Shipbuilding materialized following a memorandum of understanding signed at Sea Air Space 2025, an exhibition in Washington. Both entities agreed to join forces to improve shipbuilding productivity and advance technology in the shipbuilding sector.

The cutting-edge welding system developed by HD Hyundai aims to streamline welding operations, making them safer and more efficient. By automatically identifying work targets and conditions, the system adjusts welding positions in real-time. This transition allows workers to supervise multiple robots simultaneously, intervening manually only when necessary. Real-time data collection during the welding process facilitates quality control, process enhancement, and work history tracking.

Broadening Cooperation and Future Prospects

Having already undergone successful testing at HD Hyundai’s shipyards, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho, the welding system is now being integrated at Ingalls Shipbuilding. This pilot project signifies the commencement of a comprehensive cooperation agreement encompassing various aspects of shipbuilding operations.

Joo Won-ho, the President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, expressed confidence in the partnership’s ability to enhance the efficiency of warship construction, thus delivering increased value to customers. HD Hyundai’s collaboration with the United States spans diverse areas, ranging from vessel maintenance and research to shipyard modernization. Noteworthy partnerships include formal contracts with Siemens for a next-generation marine platform and an MOU with Frazer Industries to modernize shipyards, contributing to the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

By implementing innovative technologies and fostering international cooperation, HD Hyundai and Ingalls Shipbuilding are set to redefine standards in the shipbuilding sector, ensuring enhanced productivity and quality outcomes for future projects.
