HD Hyundai Delivers World’s First Lashing-Free 13,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel
In a groundbreaking move to enhance safety and efficiency in the maritime industry, a South Korean shipbuilder has recently introduced the world’s first container ship with a revolutionary “lashing-free” design. This innovative approach aims to address longstanding safety concerns related to improper container securing and failed latching systems, which have been known to contribute to stack collapses and incidents involving containers falling overboard.
Key Features of the “Lashing-Free” Container Ship
HD Hyundai, a prominent shipbuilding company, proudly announced the successful delivery of a 13,000-TEU methanol-fueled dual-fuel container ship to France’s CMA CGM. This state-of-the-art vessel marks a significant milestone as the world’s pioneer in adopting the “lashing-free” technology. The research, development, and validation of all components for this groundbreaking design were independently completed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with HD Hyundai Samho overseeing the detailed design and construction of the ship.
Revolutionizing Container Transport Technology
The introduction of the “lashing-free” technology eliminates the conventional manual process of securing containers with lashing equipment, thereby mitigating the risk of cargo loss and enhancing overall logistics efficiency. This innovative approach also addresses structural challenges posed by traditional container ships, where large hatch covers obstruct the upward extension of cell guides, crucial for aligning containers vertically.
To overcome this hurdle, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries devised a standardized “portable bench,” acting as a mobile platform to transfer the load from deck-stacked containers to the hull. This unique system enables the extension of cell guides to the upper deck, ensuring seamless cargo handling operations compatible with standard port cranes. Furthermore, the development of the “Twistlock Rooting System” allows for secure fastening of containers outside the cargo hold cell guide area to the hull, enhancing stability during transit.
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
By adopting the “lashing-free” design, container ships can significantly boost their on-deck cargo capacity by over 10% compared to conventional vessels of similar types. This innovative technology not only optimizes cargo transport efficiency but also ensures the safe and stable shipment of containers, even in challenging sea conditions. Looking ahead, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to expand the application of this cutting-edge container transport technology to the small- and medium-sized container ship sector, promising further advancements in maritime safety and operational excellence.
