HD Hyundai Forms U.S. Shipbuilding Joint Venture

In a significant move to expand their presence in the North American market, HD Hyundai has partnered with Kiewit, the largest construction and engineering company in the United States, to establish a shipbuilding joint venture. The agreement was officially signed on October 22 in Houston, marking the formation of “HD KIEWIT SHIPBUILDING.”

New Shipyard to Revolutionize U.S. Shipbuilding Industry

The joint venture, HD Kiewit Shipbuilding, is set to construct an advanced smart shipyard on an industrial site in the United States. The project is scheduled to commence construction in 2027, with full-scale operations expected to begin in 2029. Notably, this endeavor stands out for its decision to build a new shipyard from scratch rather than opting to refurbish an existing facility.

The upcoming shipyard will pioneer the adoption of HD Hyundai’s innovative “Future of Shipyard” model and cutting-edge digital production technologies. The incorporation of advanced tools such as digital twin, automated production systems, and robotic welding will revolutionize the design and manufacturing processes, establishing a data-driven operating system. This approach aims to enhance productivity, quality, and address the shortage of skilled workers within the U.S. shipbuilding sector.

Promising Opportunities and Economic Impact

HD Kiewit Shipbuilding intends to explore various business avenues, including U.S. Navy logistics support vessels and commercial ships. Additionally, the venture is considering the production and supply of ship blocks and modules to other shipyards in the United States. Looking ahead, both companies plan to expand their collaboration into the port infrastructure domain, further enhancing their presence in the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the shipyard is projected to generate approximately 3,000 local jobs. HD Hyundai is committed to providing technical education programs to train local workers and strengthen the shipbuilding supply chain in the United States.

Choi Han-nae, head of the Planning Division at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating that it signifies HD Hyundai’s strategic commitment to the U.S. shipbuilding industry and aims to bolster Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation. Chad Johnson, CEO of Kiewit Maritime, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential to create a state-of-the-art shipyard by merging Kiewit’s infrastructure capabilities with HD Hyundai’s expertise.

With the establishment of the joint venture, both companies are poised to spearhead the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry, progressing towards the selection and design of the new shipyard.
