HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Boosts Shipyard Safety with New Investment
South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has recently unveiled plans to invest an additional 17 billion won (approximately US$12.72 million) by 2026 to strengthen its on-site safety capabilities. This investment project will focus on various aspects such as metal surface wave communication technology, the implementation of vision sensors, and upgrades to safety training systems.
Enhancing Safety Measures
The metal surface wave communication technology being developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aims to eliminate communication dead zones in crucial areas like enclosed spaces on ships. Following successful labor-management negotiations, the company will install visual sensors in high-risk zones to promptly detect hazardous situations in real-time. Additionally, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is set to fortify its safety organization and staffing by establishing a dedicated “Safety and Technology Department.” This department will be responsible for enhancing production techniques, conducting on-site inspections, and improving emergency response capabilities and professional expertise.
Reviewing Past Safety Incidents
Furthermore, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has announced a comprehensive review of major safety incidents from the past decade. The objective is to reassess the preventive measures taken during those incidents to prevent their recurrence in the future.
Addressing Recent Fatal Accidents
The decision to invest significantly in safety enhancements comes after a series of fatal accidents at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyards earlier this year. These incidents include a fire outbreak on a submarine undergoing repairs in April, resulting in the death of a subcontracted worker. In July, another worker tragically fell to his death while inspecting a gantry crane, and an Uzbek subcontractor lost his life in a work-related accident at the Ulsan Shipyard. Subsequently, in July and August, two more subcontracted workers lost their lives in separate incidents at different shipyard locations.
In response to these tragic events, South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) initiated a high-level on-site inspection of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, equivalent to a special audit, starting August 18.
Overall, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ commitment to enhancing safety measures reflects its dedication to ensuring the well-being of its workers and preventing future accidents at its shipyards.
