HD Hyundai Mipo Begins Construction of Eco-Friendly LPG Carrier

In a significant step towards sustainable shipping, HD Hyundai Mipo, a prominent South Korean shipbuilder, has commenced the construction of a 46,000 cubic meter liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. This vessel will feature an innovative ammonia dual-fuel engine, marking a pivotal moment in the industry’s transition to greener technologies. The steel-cutting ceremony took place on December 19, 2024, in Ulsan, South Korea. This new ship is part of a broader initiative by Belgian shipping company EXMAR, which has ordered four ammonia-powered vessels. The project highlights the growing importance of eco-friendly solutions in maritime transport.

Innovative Design and Features

The new LPG carrier will be a remarkable addition to the maritime fleet, measuring 190 meters in length and 30.4 meters in width. It will include three cargo holds, allowing it to transport up to 46,000 cubic meters of liquefied gas, including LPG and ammonia. One of the standout features of this vessel is its dual-fuel engine, which can operate on both ammonia and conventional diesel fuel. Ammonia is particularly noteworthy as it does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, making it a cleaner alternative for shipping operations.

In addition to its dual-fuel capabilities, the ship will incorporate various eco-friendly technologies. For instance, it will utilize a shaft generator that produces electricity from the propulsion engine’s rotating shaft. This innovation enhances energy efficiency and reduces reliance on traditional fuel sources. Furthermore, the vessel will be equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device, which helps minimize harmful emissions. Safety is also a top priority, with advanced disaster prevention technologies in place. These include real-time ammonia leak detection sensors, a water spray system to contain leaks, and an ammonia release mitigation system. Together, these features ensure that the vessel operates safely and sustainably.

The Future of Eco-Friendly Shipping

HD Hyundai Mipo’s commitment to building eco-friendly vessels aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to cut total greenhouse gases from ships by 70% by 2040 and achieve complete decarbonization by 2050. In this context, ammonia is gaining traction as a viable next-generation fuel. Its ability to be stored in pressurized tanks or low-temperature tanks without requiring cryogenic technology makes it suitable for large-scale transportation and storage.

The construction of this LPG carrier is part of a larger order from EXMAR, which includes a total of six dual-fuel midsize gas carriers. These vessels will be operated by EXMAR LPG France, a new entity formed through a joint venture with Seapeak. HD Hyundai Mipo aims to complete the four ammonia-powered ships by 2026, further solidifying its position as a leader in eco-friendly shipbuilding. An official from the company stated, “Together with HD Hyundai Shipbuilding affiliates, we will focus on securing new technologies to preempt future markets.” This proactive approach underscores the shipbuilder’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.
