HD Hyundai Samho Partners for Robotic Shipyard Innovation

HD Hyundai Samho is taking significant strides towards revolutionizing shipbuilding by integrating humanoid robots and logistics automation technology. On September 15, the company formalized a partnership with LG CNS and HD Hyundai Robotics to enhance safety and efficiency in shipyard operations. The agreement was signed at HD Hyundai Samho’s panel factory, with key executives from all three companies in attendance.

Collaboration to Transform Shipbuilding Processes

The newly signed agreement aims to develop humanoid robots capable of performing various production tasks, including measurement, forming, control, and welding. Additionally, the collaboration will focus on creating an automated logistics system for shipyards through the deployment of autonomous mobile robots. HD Hyundai Samho will lead efforts to secure manufacturing data and establish the necessary on-site infrastructure. Meanwhile, LG CNS will create and manage an artificial intelligence (AI) and data convergence platform tailored for the shipbuilding sector. HD Hyundai Robotics will contribute by developing specialized AI motion control technology for each production process. Furthermore, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will support the initiative by advancing various manufacturing technologies, including robotics, simulation, and welding.

With these advancements, HD Hyundai Samho anticipates a significant transformation in the automation of complex tasks such as welding, assembly, outfitting, and inspection. This initiative aims to surpass the limitations of existing automated equipment and collaborative robots, ultimately enhancing worker safety and boosting productivity. Since launching its Automation Innovation Center in 2022, the company has actively pursued the integration of collaborative robots and underwater hull cleaning robots, striving to create a future shipyard that minimizes high-risk tasks while improving overall efficiency.

Expertise Driving Future Shipyard Development

LG CNS brings a wealth of experience in physical AI implementation technology, having developed an integrated management system and infrastructure utilizing large language models. On the other hand, HD Hyundai Robotics offers proven robot-based solutions and optimal motion control technology, validated in real shipbuilding environments. The collaboration is set to leverage these strengths to create a safer and more productive shipbuilding ecosystem.

Kim Jae-eul, CEO of HD Hyundai Samho, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “We will lead the construction of a future shipyard that can innovate safety, quality, and productivity through the expanded application of AI and robot technology in the field.” This ambitious project marks a pivotal moment in the shipbuilding industry, as companies seek to embrace cutting-edge technology to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
