HD Korea Shipbuilding to Support Modernization of US Shipyard
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to modernize shipyards in the United States, aiming to support the revival of the American shipbuilding industry. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with US-based Fraser Industries to embark on shipyard modernization projects.
Collaboration for Shipyard Modernization
The collaboration between HD KSOE and Fraser Industries will encompass various aspects of the shipyard lifecycle. This includes shipyard assessments, yard and factory layout design, deployment of robotics and automation systems, optimization of cost, processes, quality, and productivity, as well as the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven digital solutions. Additionally, the partnership will focus on expanding supply chains and developing workforce programs to enhance the overall efficiency and competitiveness of the US shipbuilding sector.
Development of Smart Shipyards
HD KSOE aims to contribute to the development of smart shipyards by providing integrated shipyard design and construction technologies, production and operational systems, and data management frameworks. The ultimate goal is to transform Fraser Shipyard, located on the shores of Lake Superior in the US Great Lakes region, into a model demonstration project for rebuilding the US shipbuilding industry.
Fraser Shipyard is actively involved in the US Coast Guard icebreaker program through the Great Lakes Shipyard Alliance, which includes prominent members such as Fincantieri Marine Group and Donjon Marine. The strategic collaboration between HD KSOE and Fraser Industries is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning Fraser Shipyard as a key hub for the revitalization of the US shipbuilding industry.
“We are committed to leveraging our expertise in shipyard design and operations to support Fraser Shipyard in its journey towards becoming a cornerstone for the US shipbuilding industry,” stated Kim Hyung-kwan, the chief executive officer of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.
The upcoming shipyard modernization consulting contract between the two companies signifies a significant step towards enhancing the capabilities and competitiveness of the US shipbuilding industry. Through this strategic partnership, HD KSOE and Fraser Industries are poised to drive innovation and transformation within the American shipbuilding sector, laying the foundation for a sustainable and thriving future.
