HD KSOE, US firm sign MOU on shipyard revitalization
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) recently announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Fraser Industries LLC, a U.S. company, to support the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The agreement was made in Washington, D.C., as part of Seoul’s “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” (MASGA) initiative.
Partnership for Shipyard Modernization
The partnership between HD KSOE and Fraser Industries LLC aims to provide a comprehensive package of shipyard design and construction expertise, operational systems, and data management capabilities. This collaboration is seen as a crucial step towards rejuvenating the U.S. shipbuilding industry, according to a press release from both companies.
“We plan to provide the necessary expertise in shipyard design and operations to support Fraser Shipyards in becoming a focal point for the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry,” stated Kim Hyung-kwan, President and Chief Executive Officer of HD KSOE.
Key Initiatives and Investments
The MASGA initiative, standing for “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again,” underscores Seoul’s commitment to bolstering the U.S. shipbuilding sector. This program played a significant role in facilitating a tariff agreement between Korea and the United States last year. As part of this initiative, Seoul has pledged to invest $150 billion towards the revitalization of the U.S. shipbuilding industry, as part of a broader $350 billion investment commitment to the United States.
HD KSOE, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, a prominent shipbuilding group in Korea, is poised to play a vital role in supporting the modernization and enhancement of shipyards in the United States. The forthcoming contract for a shipyard modernization consulting program, set to be signed later this year, will utilize Fraser Shipyards, located along the shores of Lake Superior, as a demonstration project for the industry’s revival.
This collaboration between HD KSOE and Fraser Industries LLC signifies a significant milestone in the efforts to revitalize the U.S. shipbuilding industry, leveraging expertise and resources from both Korean and American partners.
