Heerema secures TenneT floatover barge deal

Heerema Marine Contractors Partners with TenneT

Heerema Marine Contractors, a leading Dutch offshore construction company, has recently secured a significant contract with TenneT, a Dutch-German transmission system operator. This partnership aims to enhance the infrastructure for renewable energy in the North Sea. The contract involves the delivery of a new float-over barge specifically designed for the installation of ultra-heavy topsides. This development is a crucial step in TenneT’s ambitious plan to connect multiple high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore grid systems by 2032.

Enhancing Offshore Energy Infrastructure

TenneT’s initiative focuses on establishing 14 HVDC offshore grid connection systems in the North Sea, each with a transmission capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). This project will see the installation of seven systems in Germany and seven in the Netherlands. The new float-over barge will play a vital role in this endeavor. It is engineered to transport topsides weighing approximately 30,000 tonnes. Additionally, it will accommodate a jacket structure that weighs around 10,000 tonnes.

The float-over barge is designed to facilitate the installation of these massive structures, which are essential for the efficient transmission of renewable energy. The use of such advanced technology underscores the commitment of both Heerema and TenneT to innovation in the energy sector. By enhancing the offshore grid infrastructure, they aim to support the growing demand for renewable energy sources in Europe. This project not only represents a significant investment in technology but also aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy solutions.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Arno Schroor, the project director at Heerema, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He stated, “This project perfectly aligns with our commitment to innovation and supports TenneT’s efforts to expand the North Sea electricity grid for renewable energy.” This statement highlights the shared vision of both companies to promote sustainable energy practices.

The North Sea has become a focal point for renewable energy development, particularly wind energy. As countries strive to meet their climate goals, the demand for robust energy infrastructure continues to grow. The partnership between Heerema and TenneT is a testament to the importance of collaboration in achieving these objectives. By investing in advanced technologies like the float-over barge, they are paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
