Heroic Mother Dies Saving Son in Boat Tragedy

A tragic boating accident in the Berbice River claimed the life of 30-year-old Kayandra Lindie on Friday morning. The incident occurred near De Veldt Village when the boat she was traveling in capsized after hitting a submerged log. Lindie, who was with her five-year-old son, made a heroic effort to save him before becoming trapped underwater.

Details of the Incident

Kayandra Lindie was returning home to East Canje, Berbice, after visiting her brother when the accident occurred. She was traveling with her son and five other passengers, including the boat’s captain, 32-year-old Aldwayne Denhart. According to Denhart, the boat struck an unseen log, causing it to overturn rapidly. Amid the chaos, Lindie was the last person in the boat and managed to push her son out to safety just before she was submerged.

Witnesses reported that the young boy recounted his mother’s last words: “You can’t die with me,” as she urged him to escape the sinking vessel. Despite the quick actions of nearby residents who rushed to assist, Lindie was found unresponsive after the boat capsized. Emergency services transported her and three other passengers to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where Lindie was pronounced dead. The other passengers are currently under observation in the Accident and Emergency Department.

Family members described Lindie as a devoted mother who worked tirelessly for her children. Her brother, Kesseon Lindie, expressed his grief, stating, “She was a straight-up person. I know she loves her children; she is all for them.” Another relative fondly remembered her infectious laughter and her ability to bring joy to those around her, emphasizing her role as a source of support during difficult times.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with boating and the profound sacrifices some make for their loved ones.
