Heroic Officer Rescues Victims After Boat Collision

MOUNT DORA, Fla. – An off-duty Mount Dora police officer played a crucial role in rescuing several individuals following a boat crash on Lake Dora. The incident occurred Saturday night when a 39-foot center console vessel collided with a pontoon boat, resulting in injuries to multiple passengers. Five of the seven people involved were transported to a nearby hospital but have since been released.

Incident Overview

On the evening of the accident, Officer Brandon Buzard was enjoying a fishing trip with his 6-year-old son on Lake Dora. The tranquil night took a sudden turn when they heard a loud crash nearby. Curious about the commotion, they quickly navigated their boat toward the source of the noise.

Upon arrival, Buzard witnessed a large vessel precariously positioned on top of a pontoon boat. Alarmingly, a woman was trapped beneath the wreckage. Without hesitation, Buzard called 911 and immediately began assisting with the rescue efforts. He recounted, “As soon as they were able to release her from underneath the other boat, we were able to get her onto my boat. She was unconscious.”

In total, seven individuals were involved in the crash, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed that five were taken to the hospital for treatment. Buzard’s quick actions ensured that all victims were safely transported back to shore on his boat.

Community Response and Recognition

The City of Mount Dora has publicly commended Officer Buzard for his bravery and commitment to public safety, even while off duty. Mount Dora Police Chief Michael Gibson praised Buzard’s professionalism, stating, “This incident highlights the professionalism and sense of duty our officers carry, even while off duty. His quick action and decisive response contributed to the safe rescue of multiple individuals.”

This incident is not the first time Buzard has demonstrated his dedication to helping others on Lake Dora. Last year, he rescued a man whose boat had capsized, further showcasing his commitment to community safety. Buzard’s brother, Eric Williams, remarked, “I think him going above and beyond the call of duty just reinforces that there are great officers out there like himself.”

As the investigation into the crash continues, the FWC is working to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Fortunately, all five individuals who were hospitalized have now been released, marking a positive outcome from a potentially tragic event.
