HII and Job Corps Partner to Build Careers at Ingalls Shipbuilding
HII and Job Corps: Building Careers in Shipbuilding
In a significant move to strengthen the workforce in the shipbuilding industry, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division partnered with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps program. They hosted a two-day recruiting event aimed at connecting students with career opportunities in shipbuilding. The event, held on December 6 and 7, 2024, attracted over 120 students from 20 states. These students interviewed for various positions in key trades such as welding, electrical work, and machining. By the end of the event, 68 students received job offers, marking a successful initiative to bridge education and employment.
A Direct Path to Employment
The recruiting event kicked off at the Mississippi Job Corps Center in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Representatives from Ingalls Shipbuilding conducted interviews with students eager to start their careers. This direct engagement allowed students to showcase their skills and aspirations in front of potential employers. After the interviews, those who received job offers were invited to the Ingalls Shipbuilding facility for onboarding activities. They also enjoyed a tour of the shipyard, providing them with a firsthand look at their future workplace.
Susan Jacobs, Vice President of Human Resources and Administration at Ingalls Shipbuilding, emphasized the importance of this partnership. She stated, “Our partnership with Job Corps is a vital component of our overall workforce pipeline strategy.” Jacobs expressed confidence that the students joining Ingalls are well-prepared with the necessary training and skills to support the mission of the nation’s military. This initiative not only offers students a pathway to employment but also helps address the growing demand for skilled workers in the shipbuilding sector.

The recruiting event underscores the importance of partnerships between educational programs and industry leaders. By working together, they can create a robust talent pipeline that meets the needs of the shipbuilding workforce.
