HIP Witnesses Shift in Cruise Ship Origins with European Vessels Leading as
Hambantota Port Sees Growth in European Cruise Arrivals
The Hambantota International Port (HIP) has experienced a notable increase in cruise ship arrivals in 2024. This year marked a significant shift in the origins of the vessels docking at the port. While the number of ships arriving from the Indian subcontinent decreased, there was a remarkable rise in arrivals from Europe. Out of the 23 cruise ships that visited HIP this year, only six were from India, whereas 17 hailed from various European countries. This trend highlights the evolving dynamics of the cruise industry and the growing appeal of HIP as a destination.
A New Era for Cruise Tourism at HIP
The last three cruise liners to dock at HIP in 2024 underscored the port’s expanding reputation. The Mv. Azamara Pursuit, part of the Azamara Cruise Line fleet based in Miami, made its inaugural visit in early December. Although it was the first time the Azamara Pursuit called at HIP, the port had previously welcomed its sister ships: Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey in May and November 2023, respectively, along with Azamara Onward in April. After a successful stay at HIP, the Azamara Pursuit departed for Phuket. The local agent, Prudential Shipping, played a crucial role in facilitating 10 cruise liner calls to the port this year, showcasing the importance of strong partnerships in the cruise tourism sector.

The other two cruise liners that wrapped up the year at HIP were the Mv. Celebrity Millennium and the Mv. Silver Whisper. Both vessels arrived on December 13, 2024, before continuing to their next destinations. This successful conclusion to the cruise season reflects the port’s growing attractiveness to international cruise lines and travelers alike.
Future Prospects for Hambantota International Port
Looking ahead, the future appears bright for Hambantota International Port. Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group, expressed optimism about the port’s performance in 2025. He noted that the cruise industry’s evolving dynamics indicate a renewed interest in unique destinations like HIP. The trend of European vessels exploring South Asia is expected to continue, driven by a growing demand for culturally rich and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Qu anticipates an increase in arrivals from Europe and a resurgence from the Indian subcontinent, aligning with broader industry trends that signal a robust recovery in cruise tourism.
To capitalize on this momentum, HIP is focusing on enhancing its facilities and streamlining operations. The port aims to foster strong partnerships with shipping agents to solidify its position as a key player in the region’s cruise tourism landscape. As the global cruise industry rebounds, HIP is committed to establishing itself as a premier destination for luxury liners, offering unparalleled service and unique experiences for travelers from around the world.
