HM shipping lines achieves green yard certification from ClassNK

HM Shipping Lines has made significant strides toward environmental sustainability in the shipbreaking industry. Since 2020, the company has worked diligently to establish itself as a green yard. On December 27, 2024, it received a “Statement of Compliance” from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). This certification aligns with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009, as adopted by the IMO Resolution MEPC.210(63). This achievement marks a pivotal moment for the company and the broader shipbreaking sector in Bangladesh.

Investment in Sustainability and Safety

To create an environmentally friendly green yard, the Mustafa Hakim Group has invested in advanced equipment and skilled personnel. The primary goals of this initiative are environmental protection and workforce safety. The company recognizes the importance of sustainable practices in ship recycling, aiming to minimize ecological impact while ensuring the safety of its workers.

The initiative is spearheaded by the chairman and directors of HM Shipping Lines Limited, who are committed to transforming Bangladesh’s shipbreaking industry. Their efforts reflect a growing awareness of the need for responsible practices in this sector. A certificate handover ceremony took place on January 22, 2025, at the Peninsula Hotel in Chittagong, celebrating the green yard certification granted by ClassNK.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Mr. Yoichi Iga, Regional Manager of Middle East and South Asia at ClassNK, and Mr. Mobasher Al Mahmud, Country Manager and General Manager of Bangladesh. Representing HM Shipping Lines were Managing Director Mr. Mohammad Sarwar Alam and Directors Mr. Mohammad Faruk Azam and Mr. Shahidul Alam. The presence of industry leaders underscores the significance of this achievement and the collective commitment to enhancing environmental standards in ship recycling.
