HMM Partners with Avikus for AI Navigation
South Korean shipping giant HMM has taken a significant leap into the future of maritime transport by signing contracts with Avikus to implement AI-driven autonomous navigation solutions. This collaboration includes a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, focusing on joint research and technological development. HMM aims to initially deploy these advanced navigation solutions across 40 vessels, with plans for fleet-wide expansion depending on performance results.
Strategic Collaboration to Enhance Maritime Efficiency
The partnership between HMM, HD Korea Shipbuilding, and Avikus is designed to push the limits of AI technology in the maritime sector. As part of their agreement, HMM will oversee the deployment of autonomous navigation systems while providing crucial operational data. HD Korea Shipbuilding will contribute by supplying vessel platforms and technical support, while Avikus will focus on enhancing the autonomous navigation solutions. This collaborative effort is expected to result in a significant boost in the efficiency and competitiveness of HMM’s fleet.
HMM plans to utilize the HiNAS Control system developed by Avikus, which combines perception, judgment, and control capabilities into a single integrated platform. An official from HMM emphasized the strategic importance of AI technology, stating, “AI-based technology is core technology for strengthening competitiveness in the digital and eco-friendly shipping ecosystem.” Similarly, an HD Hyundai representative pointed out that autonomous navigation technology is set to revolutionize both the shipbuilding and shipping industries.
Avikus has already established itself as a leader in the autonomous navigation field, having equipped approximately 350 ships with its HiNAS Control technology, including over 100 large retrofitted vessels. This latest agreement further solidifies Avikus’s position as a key player in transforming maritime operations through advanced technology.
